If your legs want to save 0.6 of a mile and 200ft of ascent, and you want to miss the made hard surface path which ascends to the station from Halfpenny house, with the attendant doubling back on yourself, this is for you. Finishing the Wild Boar Fell walk (18), go left on the Tommy Road to join the end of the Smardale walk, (22)at the path on the strip of open access land which goes north and joins a minor road at Moor End. Do not curve right to Moor End, however, but keep straight on to the left of the small wood and go through a gate(need to untie a rope) in the fence and join the road, unfenced here. Go to the A685, which, although busy at weekends, has an ample green kerb on the right hand side and a large lay-by on the curve, so it is not dangerous.
