In the event of anyone actually doing the Settle to Carlisle walk, here's an alternative from Orton to Crosby Ravensworth which is less exposed in the event of a bad day, has more interest in the form of ancient settlement sites, but does have far more stiles and gates. Misty start to the day and wanted a shorter walk , so did the pleasant valley start to Walk 20, past Wharton Hall and Pendragon Castle, the latter currently blocked to entrance. Ascended the High Seat ridge with clearing visibility and sun, as for the Walk, but at the first zig-zag on the grassy
Alternative start to the Malham Circular walk
Note, this is now fully described in the Second Edition of "Hillwalks from the Settle to Carlisle Railway Stations", 2014, walk 1b. If the long Langcliffe Scar track does not appeal, but a bit more hillwork does, try this start: as per the book, walk 1, but at the Malham/Settle road turn right
