I have written extensively about the difficulty in accessing “open access” land in my “stations” walks book, and here is some more!
On a recent walk up to Wolfhole Crag on the Forest of Bowland fells, a good route seemed to be via Mallowdale Pike, but there is no legal access to the access land except by going through a gate east of the Roeburn river at Mallowdale Bridge, going south and crossing the river higher up. This would have been a considerable crossing in current conditions, and only suitable in a dry summer really.
I cheated of course. Its not “open access” land: it’s “open roaming land with limited access” and would suggest everyone calls it that until something is done about it.
The walk, of 9.5miles, is quite good, returning via the good track from Slaidburn, (Hornby Road).
