Shorter Nine Standards walk, and a shorter round from Kirkby Stephen

By Hugh Stewart April 3, 2014 Leave a Comment

Misty start to the day and wanted a shorter walk , so did the pleasant valley start to Walk 20, past Wharton Hall and Pendragon Castle, the latter currently blocked to entrance. Ascended the High Seat ridge with clearing visibility and sun, as for the Walk, but at the first zig-zag on the grassy track kept straight on to climb High Brae, and then it was an easy walk to High Pike Hill. Reversed this part of Walk 21 down to the road by the sign and north up the track, forking left at the first junction onto a track not on the map. When this crests the ridge under Tailbridge Hill  a turn left up the dry tussocky pathless slope past some odd low walls leads upto the large summit cairn. From here a few yards right, north, an easy descent to the wall allows a quad track to take you down to the road a short mile from Nateby and so join the end of Walk 21. Four hours, nine miles when done from Nateby.

This Tailbridge Hill descent shortens the Nine Standards Walk if weather/time alters your plans.

Mountain Biking Adventures: Multi-day Routes in Northern Britain

Over the last two decades, mountain biking has developed enormously as a “sport”. We greatly admire the technical and athletic capabilities of modern day mountain bikers and recognise that many excellent guides have been written and custom-built trails set up. In this guide we try to reopen a sense of adventure and wilderness to mountain biking, providing multi-day routes with a remoteness, continuity and “arc” missing from many modern guides with their focus on day and half day outings.

Ambleside Grasmere circular via Loughrigg.

A very pleasant 8.6 mile walk with just over 2000ft of ascent, with the raised coffin route outward giving good views, and Loughrigg on the return more widespread ones and more effort. From Ambleside go north on the main road to take a right on the track to Rydal through the park. An early café

Watendlath and Borrowdale circular

A suitable pre-Theatre by the Lake evening production, when the cloud level is low and you don't fancy walking with no views in the damp. It comes to just under 9 miles with 2100ft of ascent. From the Lodore Wood car park up the Watendlath road, take the road south till an obvious track leads off

Addition to the book of Trespass: Warcop.

This is an 8 mile walk over Little Fell and down and along the side of Scordale. A wild, lonely, and in places rough walk, with 2100ft of climbing. The trespass refers to the fact that most of the walk is in the MOD's land, with access granted by them on 12 weekends per year and other odd days. The
